We (SCHS) were organized by Dr. E.B. Horrall in 1966, to promote and preserve Steuben County heritage.  Over the years, the Society under the late Chuck Skove collected many artifacts and occupied a number of Angola locations including the Hartman House at 901 West Maumee, and space in the old jail. In 1975, the Cline House at 313 E. Maumee was donated to the society by the will of Carrie Cline Cameron (wife of Dr. Cameron, who established the hospital across the street).  She intended for the house to be a museum, both to preserve the memory of the families who lived there, and also for the community artifacts. The Cline House contains materials relating to its founding families, the Clines and the Camerons. It also has items relating to early Angola. The closets are filled with period dresses and military uniforms. Activities of the SCHS over recent years include 2 Historical Treasure Hunts wherein participants were given a map and clues to find historical structures across the county, We generally have a speaker at the Cline, spring and fall, addressing various historical topics. Currently we are putting together a historical display about Steuben County which will be a permanent fixture in the newly reconstructed Rest Stop on I-69 at Pigeon Creek. We recently started digitizing our collection; a process which will take many years.
